8 Quick Apply Full-time Part-time 11 hours ago Full Job Description The Northport VA Medical Center for one Medical Instrument Technician (GI) for the Specialty Medicine Service line.
The Medical Instrument Technician (MIT) is a member of the Gastroenterology (GI) team and aids the physician, nurse manager, registered nurse, and other team members during diagnostic examinations or medical treatment procedures as part of the diagnosis and treatment of patients.
This position is eligible for the Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP), a student loan payment reimbursement program.
You must meet specific individual eligibility requirements in accordance with VHA policy and submit your EDRP application within four months of appointment.
Approval, award amount (up to $200,000) and eligibility period (one to five years) are determined by the VHA Education Loan Repayment Services program office after complete review of the EDRP application.

The MIT must possess knowledge of highly technical medical instruments, human anatomy, physiology, and aseptic/clean technique to prepare and protect the integrity of the equipment during GI procedures.
Knowledge of equipment reprocessing must include standard operating procedures for high level of disinfection and tests to determine the effectiveness of disinfection, packaging storage, and shelf life.
Also includes the proper cleaning techniques and the types of detergents to use on various items, as well as the proper handling and rotation of sterile supplies, handling of contaminated items, quality control, and personal hygiene.
Must have in-depth knowledge of universal precautions and know how to implement infection control policies and procedures.
Knowledge of anatomy and physiology related to the GI system, with ability to recognize and report obvious abnormalities during procedures.
Ability to deliver patient care, including vital sign measurements and medication administration.
Ability to assist physician with specialized, complex procedures.
The MIT possess knowledge of a wide variety of complex GI procedures and possible complications in order to prepare for the procedure, to anticipate the needs of the GI Team, to respond with speed and accuracy, and to report observations and immediate procedural needs to the physician and/or registered nurse.
Thorough knowledge of all appropriate names, uses, physical characteristics, functions, and processing procedures for the full range of GI supplies and equipment is required.
Familiarity with dosages and proper use of all medications administered is required.
In order to prepare for GI procedures, the MIT must have sufficient knowledge of anatomy, physiology, and protocol to select the correct instruments for a procedure, anticipate the needs of the physician and/or registered nurse during the procedure, and on a regular and recurring basis recognize and respond to a variety of critical situations, including emergency and life threatening conditions.
Knowledge of pathological care and handling of specimens correctly are essential for the prevention of damage to or loss of specimens and eventual diagnosis.
During procedures in which specimen are taken, the MIT must display knowledge and skill necessary for proper handling of specimen such as brushings, polypectomies, and biopsies.
The MIT must possess knowledge of procedure and function of all GI instruments and equipment, testing procedures to assure all equipment works, and proper post GI procedures decontamination processes and/or procedures such as knowing how to prepare instruments for gas and steam sterilization.
In addition, the MIT must understand the proper procedure, and safety precautions for high level disinfecting of instruments using approved agents.
The MIT is responsible for proper storage of instruments and supplies to maintain cleanliness.
The MIT must possess knowledge of proper patient positioning depending on the types of procedures, be able to provide emotional support to patients, and be able to recognize adverse reactions when he/she assists GI providers with GI procedures.
While functioning as a GI MIT, the incumbent must have knowledge about GI instrumentation and equipment, and diagnostic procedures commonly used in a GPT setting to include GI studies.
Must know signs, symptoms, and appropriate treatment of allergic reaction to any contrast used during procedures, must have working knowledge of ERCP, ultrasound, and Fluoroscopy/x-ray machines, and must understand the proper operation of all GI tables and radiology equipment in the GI Endoscopy Unit.
Knowledge that reprocessing is the cleaning, disinfection, sterilization, and preparation equipment to full readiness for its subsequent use, which can occur in part or in whole, either inside or outside of supply, processing and distribution (SPD) and GI Studies.
Knowledge of infection controls issues related to RME to include storage, handling, setup, use, reprocessing, maintenance, and use of personal protective equipment (PPE).
Ability to collaborate, communicate, and demonstrate customer service skills and interpersonal skills with all healthcare professionals to ensure quality and continuity of care.
The MIT must be knowledgeable about and thoroughly understand the concepts and applicability of Joint Commission, Occupational Safety Health and Administration (OSHA), VA, and all other safety and occupational health regulations to assure compliance, and/or to provide methods for bringing the medical center GI programs into compliance with applicable regulations.

Licensure or Certification.
Licensure or Certification is not required for this occupation; however, it is strongly desirable at GS-6 or above as evidence of possession of the essential knowledge, skills, and abilities.
For certain functional areas at the higher levels or supervisory assignments, specific certifications appropriate to the specialty are indicated in this standard under Titles and Certification/Registrations.
For all specialties identified in this standard, Basic and Advanced Cardiac Life Support certifications are desirable.
Training which does not result in official certification does not meet this definition.

English Language Proficiency.
Medical Instrument Technicians must be proficient in spoken and written English in accordance with chapter 2, section D, paragraph 5a, this part.
Gastroenterology (GI) Technicians assist the practitioner in endoscopic procedures, such as esophagogastroduodenoscopy (EGD), colonoscopy, endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP), and endoscopic ultrasound.
The technicians ensure proper performance of equipment, set up equipment, and reprocess endoscopic reusable medical equipment (RME).
Certification is offered by the Society of Gastroenterology Nurses and Associates (SGNA) for level one and level two training.
GI endoscope reprocessing certification is offered through the Certification Board of Sterile Processing and Distribution (CBSPD).
Creditable Experience - Knowledge of Current Medical Instrument Technician Practices.
To be creditable, the experience must have required the use of knowledge, skills, abilities and other characteristics associated with current Medical Instrument Technician practice appropriate to the identified specialty area.
Specialized developmental experience obtained under supervision of appropriately certified individuals may be credited at higher levels and is addressed in individual appendices.
Quality of Experience.
Experience is only creditable if it is equivalent to at least the next lower grade level and is directly related to the position/specialty to be filled.
Part-time Experience.
Part time experience is credited according to its relationship to a full time work week.
For example, an individual employed 20 hours per week, or on a time basis would receive one work week credit for each two weeks of service.
Grade Determinations:
In addition to the basic requirements for employment, the criteria discussed in the applicable headings, or that defined in the appendices, must be met when determining the grade of candidates.
GS-7 GI Technician (Full Performance Level) Experience.
At least 1 year of experience comparable to the next lower grade level which demonstrates the knowledge, skills, and abilities related to the duties of the position to be filled.
This would be experience which provided knowledge of proper performance of endoscopic equipment and procedures.
In addition, the candidate must demonstrate the following KSAs:
Demonstrated Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities 1.
Knowledge of endoscopic equipment and use in basic and complex endoscopic procedures.

Knowledge of anatomy and physiology related to the GI system, with ability to recognize and report obvious abnormalities during procedures.

Knowledge of universal precautions and disinfection techniques and ability to follow SOP's to clean reusable medical equipment (RME).

Ability to collaborate, communicate, and demonstrate customer service skills and interpersonal skills with all healthcare professionals to ensure quality and continuity of care.

Ability to use basic computer systems and programs to record patient and endoscopic data, adhering to patient privacy and information security policies.
7.
Ability to deliver patient care, including vital sign measurements and medication administration.
Certification.
No certification is required; however, it is desirable that employees at this level have BLS certification.
Assignment.
This represents the full performance level.
Technicians at this level function with minimal instruction, assisting the staff with complex specialized procedures such as ERCP and endoscopic ultrasound (EUS).
They are proficient with GI endoscopic equipment and ensure proper performance of endoscopic equipment; select alternate equipment or adjust equipment settings to accommodate patient needs and produce high quality technique.
They collect, process, and label all specimens; train other technicians in basic endoscopic procedures; work in and outside the GI unit offering technician support during emergent and on-call endoscopic cases; and assist the nurse in patient care duties such as obtaining vital signs, dressing and documenting all pertinent information in the patient's records.
They inventory and maintain par levels of specialty equipment for the endoscopy unit.
