Registered Nurse - Patient Safety Manager
The major duties of this position include, but are not limited to the following, The incumbent provides administrative oversight related to the Patient Safety Program activities, both clinical and administrative, at the Northport VAMC. The incumbent works collaboratively with leaders of all departments, services, programs, and executive leadership to, implement, monitor, evaluate, and improve care, as well as meet operational goals of the Medical Center, VISN 2 and Central Office. S/he oversees the Patient Safety program and works with various department to create a positive organizational climate related to Patient Safety. The patient safety manager demonstrates the ability to function effectively in team leader/facilitator or other leadership roles requiring application of problem-solving skills at the unit or team level, and uses team approaches to identify, analyze and resolve problems in patient care or staff performance. The Patient Safety Manager supports Root Cause Analysis Activities, and serves as the facility point of contact for patient safety alerts/advisories including tracking system of actions. The incumbent administers hospital wide patient safety programs and works with various committees and departments to set goals and design plans for overall organization improvement related to patient safety. The Patient Safety Manager is responsible for facility oversight of Mental Health Environment of Care Committee (MHEOCC) activities and audits/action plans. The incumbent will lead and ensure the completion of Health Mode Failure Effects Analysis (HMFEAs). A large portion of this role includes tracking actions and outcomes as well as monitoring for sustainability. OR The completion of coursework equivalent to a nursing degree in a MSN Bridge Program that qualifies for professional nursing registration constitutes the completion of an approved course of study of professional nursing. Students should submit the certificate of professional nursing to sit for the NCLEX to the VA along with a copy of the MSN transcript. (Reference VA Handbook 5005, Appendix G6) OR In cases of graduates of foreign schools of professional nursing, possession of a current, full, active and unrestricted registration will meet the requirement for graduation from an approved school of professional nursing. Nurse I Level I - An Associate Degree (ADN) or Diploma in Nursing, with no additional nursing practice/experience required. Nurse I Level II - An ADN or Diploma in Nursing and approximately 1 year of nursing practice/experience; OR an ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a bachelor's degree in a related field with no additional nursing practice/experience; OR a Bachelor's of Science in Nursing (BSN) with no additional nursing practice/experience. This position requires visual acuity, keen hearing, clear distinctive speech, and manual dexterity. This position requires potentially long periods of continued walking, standing, stooping, sitting, bending, pulling, and pushing. Transferring patients and objects may be required. The incumbent may be exposed to infected patients and contaminated materials and may be required to don protective clothing in isolation situations or operative/invasive procedures. The incumbent may occasionally be exposed to patients who are combative secondary to delirium, dementia, or psychiatric disorders. The incumbent must be a mature, flexible, sensible individual capable of working effectively in stressful situations, able to shift priorities based on patient needs.
